Jaima Rahman Once Offered Chelsea Women’s Goalkeeper Role

Bangladesh’s Sports Minister Aminul Haque has revealed that Jaima Rahman, daughter of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, was once offered a position as goalkeeper for Chelsea Women’s Football Club, one of the most prestigious clubs in the English Premier League.

In a recent interview with local media, Minister Haque shared, “Our current Prime Minister’s wife, Dr. Zubaida Rahman, and their accomplished daughter Jaima have an extraordinary passion for sports. During my visit to London to meet the Prime Minister, I had the opportunity to speak directly with both Dr. Zubaida and Jaima.”

Sporting Passion Runs in the Family

Minister Haque emphasised that both mother and daughter share a far greater enthusiasm for sports than the Prime Minister himself. He quoted the Prime Minister as saying:

“Aminul, my love for sports does not compare to that of my wife and daughter Jaima Rahman. They are a thousand times more passionate than I am.”

Standing tall and athletic, Jaima reportedly caught the attention of Chelsea’s scouts and was offered the opportunity to join the club as a goalkeeper. While her talent was sufficient to earn this chance, Minister Haque suggested that family priorities may have influenced her decision not to pursue a professional football career abroad.

“She is physically well-suited for goalkeeping. That opportunity was genuinely offered, but for reasons perhaps related to family priorities, she did not take it up,” he explained.

Interestingly, Minister Haque also shared a lighter detail: despite her Chelsea connection, Jaima is reportedly a Manchester United supporter, mirroring the minister’s own allegiance and adding a playful contradiction to her football affiliations.

Minister Haque’s comments not only highlight Jaima Rahman’s natural sporting ability but also underline the deep-seated passion for athletics within her family. While she did not pursue a professional career, her brief association with Chelsea Women’s FC demonstrates that she possesses the skill, physical aptitude, and determination necessary to compete at an elite level.

This revelation has sparked significant curiosity and admiration among sports enthusiasts in Bangladesh. Many have praised Jaima’s potential and athletic capabilities, while others have taken note of the unique intersection between political prominence and international sporting opportunities that her story represents.

As women’s football continues to grow in Bangladesh, Jaima Rahman’s story serves as a compelling reminder of the latent talent within the country and the opportunities that can arise on the global stage. Her experience underscores that exceptional ability and dedication can attract attention even in arenas far removed from the domestic sporting landscape.

Whether or not she chooses to pursue football professionally in the future, Jaima Rahman’s brush with elite-level football has already inspired discussions about nurturing young talent and promoting women’s participation in sports, signalling a promising future for Bangladesh’s next generation of athletes.
