Bangladesh’s opening duo, Sadman Islam and Mahmudul Hasan Joy, delivered a masterclass in patience and aggression on the second day of the Sylhet Test, taking Ireland’s bowlers apart with a scintillating display at the crease. Both batsmen seemed poised to register centuries, but Sadman’s gallant innings ended in heartbreak as he fell just shy of his milestone.
Joy, however, has continued to impress with his resolute and calm approach, inching ever closer to his century with remarkable concentration. At the tea interval on Day 2, Bangladesh were in total control, reaching 198 for the loss of just one wicket. Despite trailing Ireland by 88 runs, the hosts had nine wickets in hand, signalling a strong position in the match.
Sadman, whose innings was fluent and elegant, struck 80 runs from 104 deliveries before falling victim to an attempted cut shot off Matthew Humphreys. The ball caught the bottom edge of his bat and was securely taken by the wicketkeeper. While the on-field umpire initially turned down the appeal, Ireland opted for a successful review, bringing an end to Sadman’s painstaking innings.
Joy remained unbeaten on 94 from 184 balls, demonstrating impeccable technique and focus. Mominul Haque, coming in at number three, has settled in comfortably, contributing 21 runs from 43 deliveries alongside Joy. Their partnership, though cautious after Sadman’s dismissal, helped steady the innings and build a platform for a commanding total.
The opening session saw Bangladesh dominate completely, scoring 109 runs in just 24 overs without losing a wicket. Their aggressive yet controlled approach put Ireland on the back foot from the start, highlighting the hosts’ superiority in familiar conditions. After tea, Joy consolidated his position, carefully navigating the Irish attack and showing the patience required to bring up a well-earned century.
Bangladesh’s dominance on Day 2 is a statement of intent. With a solid pitch that continues to favour the batsmen, and Joy closing in on a three-figure score, the hosts are perfectly placed to carve out a substantial first-innings lead. Ireland, meanwhile, will need to regroup and rethink their strategies if they are to regain control of the Test.
