Barcelona president Joan Laporta has poured cold water on the long-standing dream of many fans — a possible return of Lionel Messi to the Catalan giants.
Recently, a series of photographs showing Messi standing inside Camp Nou circulated across social media, reigniting hope among Barcelona supporters that their beloved hero might once again don the famous blaugrana shirt. However, Laporta has made it clear that such a reunion, at least as a player, is not realistic.
Speaking to Catalunya Ràdio, Laporta said:
“Messi’s departure from Barcelona did not happen the way I would have liked. But out of respect for both the club and for Messi himself, I don’t want to fuel unrealistic speculation. A return as a player simply isn’t feasible.”
The Argentine legend, who is currently with Inter Miami, was in Spain as his national team prepared for a friendly match. On Sunday evening, he quietly paid a nostalgic visit to his old home, Camp Nou, accompanied by close friend and Argentina teammate Rodrigo De Paul. Security staff granted them entry to the stadium, where Messi spent a few private moments reflecting on his past.
Sharing the photos on Instagram, Messi captioned them emotionally:
“I went back to a place I miss deeply… I hope one day I can return — not as a player, but in another way.”
His heartfelt post immediately triggered speculation about a possible reunion with Barça. In a later interview with Sport, Messi reiterated his desire to return to live in Barcelona city in the future, though not necessarily as a footballer.
Laporta confirmed that he had not been informed in advance of Messi’s visit, but he also revealed plans for a grand farewell once the club’s renovated stadium is ready to reopen.
“Camp Nou is Leo’s home,” said Laporta. “When the reconstruction is complete, we want to organise a farewell match to honour him properly — in front of 105,000 fans, paying the most beautiful tribute possible.”
Despite leaving the club in 2021 for Paris Saint-Germain, and later moving to Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, Messi’s connection with Barcelona remains profound. Yet, as Laporta admitted, the dream of seeing him play again in the famous red and blue colours appears, for now, to belong only to the realm of nostalgia.
