Liverpool launched wave after wave of attacks from the outset, putting Real Madrid under intense pressure. But standing firm as an impenetrable wall was Real’s goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois. It was as though the match was a battle between Courtois and Liverpool, and despite his best efforts, Courtois could not keep the Reds at bay. In the end, Jurgen Klopp’s side secured a fantastic victory, toppling a high-flying Real Madrid.
In a Champions League encounter at Anfield on Tuesday night, Liverpool made the breakthrough in the 61st minute, thanks to a goal from Alexis Mac Allister. The Argentine midfielder’s strike was enough to give Liverpool a 1-0 win over the Spanish giants.
Just last week, Real Madrid had triumphed over Barcelona in El Clasico, but their momentum was halted here. Despite spending much of the match behind in possession, Liverpool dominated in attack. The Reds had 17 shots, nine of which were on target, compared to Real’s eight shots, only two of which tested the Liverpool goalkeeper.
From the outset, Real struggled to make an impact. In the 27th minute, they nearly found themselves behind, but Courtois came to their rescue with a superb save, denying Dominik Szoboszlai’s powerful shot with a brilliant right-footed stop. Towards the end of the first half, Real tested Liverpool’s keeper Georgio Mamardashvili only once, with Jude Bellingham’s attempt from the left wing being blocked.
Real were also lucky to avoid conceding a penalty when, in the 30th minute, a shot from Szoboszlai struck the arm of French defensive midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni inside the box. The referee initially blew for a free kick, but the VAR review dismissed Liverpool’s penalty claim.
In the second half, Liverpool stepped up their offensive play. It was only a matter of time before they broke Courtois’ resistance. In the 61st minute, Szoboszlai delivered a brilliant cross into the penalty box from a free kick. Mac Allister rose to head home, sending the Anfield crowd into raptures. That goal proved to be the match-winner.
With three wins from four matches, Liverpool now sit in 6th place with 9 points, while Real Madrid are just above them in 5th, having the same points but with a superior goal difference.
