Manchester United delivered a statement victory last night, routing Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-1 in the Premier League, yet the Old Trafford giants’ season remains a rollercoaster of highs and lows. While fans might be tempted to celebrate, the club’s ongoing struggles make unbridled optimism a risky proposition.
On the road at Molineux Stadium, Bruno Fernandes once again proved his worth with a brace, while Bryan Mbeumo and Mason Mount also found the back of the net for United. Wolves’ solitary reply came from Haitian midfielder Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, whose goal offered a fleeting moment of joy for the home supporters.
United’s win, while impressive, masks the underlying fragility of their season. The Red Devils have stumbled in 13 of their opening 15 league fixtures, leaving them languishing mid-table despite the recent triumph. Wolves, by contrast, remain mired at the bottom, having collected just two points—matching the lowest tally in the top four tiers of English football history. Since April, Wolverhampton have failed to register a single league victory, enduring 16 defeats and three draws in the process.
Despite these challenges, United capitalised on Wolves’ struggles to climb to sixth in the table. With 25 points from 15 matches—seven wins, four draws, and four losses—they are now just eight points behind league leaders Arsenal.
The game itself saw United take an early lead in the 25th minute, as Fernandes slotted home to silence a vocal section of home fans, who had been chanting against club owners Fosun Group. Wolves briefly restored parity in stoppage time of the first half when Bellegarde struck, ending a 540-minute goal drought. However, the joy was short-lived; Mbeumo’s tap-in from Diogo Dalot’s cross early in the second half restored United’s advantage.
Mount extended the lead to 3-1 in the 62nd minute, and Fernandes sealed the emphatic win with a penalty in the 82nd. By the final whistle, the majority of Wolves fans had vacated the stands, leaving only a few to vent their frustration.
