Matthäus Slams Vinícius Over On-Field Conduct

Ahead of the highly anticipated UEFA Champions League quarter-final clash between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, German football legend Lothar Matthäus has reignited debate with sharp criticism of Real Madrid’s Brazilian forward Vinícius Júnior.

Matthäus, 65, who won the 1990 FIFA World Cup with Germany and claimed the Ballon d’Or the same year, is no stranger to European football’s spotlight. A two-time Bundesliga champion with Bayern Munich, Matthäus has played 16 seasons at the top level, securing six league titles. In a recent interview, he accused Vinícius of provoking opponents and displaying unsporting behaviour on the field.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Matthäus said, “Vinícius is undoubtedly a fantastic talent, but he consistently provokes his opponents. Any proper challenge against him often leads to complaints, and he ends up crying on the pitch.”

He also criticised Real Madrid itself for what he considers a lack of respect towards other players and teams. Matthäus cited the club’s absence at the 2024 Ballon d’Or ceremony, following Rodri’s victory, as an example of unsporting conduct. “Rodri was rightly chosen,” he said. “But Real Madrid refused to attend, claiming, ‘It’s unfair, one of ours should have won.’ That is not the right approach. Respect for opponents and fellow professionals is fundamental.”

This is not Matthäus’ first public critique of Vinícius. Following the Brazilian forward’s recognition as FIFA’s Best Men’s Player in December 2024, Matthäus expressed disappointment over his behaviour, drawing comparisons with fellow Brazilian Neymar. In an interview with German daily Bild, he remarked, “Vinícius reminds me of Neymar: exceptional talent but volatile temperament. He provokes fans, engages in disputes, and his gestures often incite confrontation. His finishing and pace are world-class, but his conduct is misguided. Neymar was the wrong role model for him.”

The first leg of the quarter-final is scheduled tonight at Santiago Bernabéu, with kickoff at 1:00 a.m. Bangladesh time. Bayern Munich will be keen to assert their authority against a Real Madrid side brimming with attacking talent, while Matthäus’ comments have added an extra layer of tension ahead of the showdown.
