Mushfiq and Mahmudullah Find Teams in Second Draft as Rajshahi and Rangpur Make Their Picks

In the second phase of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) auction, senior national cricketers Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah Riyad finally found teams, after remaining unsold in the first round. Both players were listed under the ‘B’ category, making them highly sought-after names in the league.

Rangpur Riders secured Mahmudullah for a base price of 3.5 million BDT, while Mushfiqur Rahim was snapped up by Rajshahi Warriors. According to the auction rules, players unsold in the first round are typically relegated by one category in the second round. This would have placed both Mushfiq and Mahmudullah in the ‘C’ category.

However, in a mark of respect for the two seasoned cricketers, both franchises decided to recruit them at the original ‘B’ category base price. Rangpur Riders’ owner, Ishtiaq Sadek, personally recommended to the BPL Governing Council that the category downgrade be waived in recognition of the players’ stature. The Governing Council accepted this proposal, ensuring that both stars retained their original auction status.

Mahmudullah, who played for the championship-winning Fortune Barishal in the last edition of the BPL, has remained a dominant force in the domestic league, despite stepping away from international cricket. Mushfiqur Rahim, meanwhile, continues to represent Bangladesh in the Test format and has been in excellent form with the bat.

The acquisition of these experienced players adds both leadership and stability to their respective squads. Their presence not only boosts team performance but also provides younger teammates with invaluable guidance and mentorship. The decision underscores the franchises’ strategy of balancing emerging talent with seasoned campaigners, ensuring competitive edge and continuity in the league.
