Newcastle United and Bayer Leverkusen have secured their places in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16, following contrasting yet decisive performances on Tuesday. Both clubs confirmed their progression in front of eager home and away crowds, highlighting their growing ambitions on Europe’s biggest stage.
Newcastle Overcomes Qarabag 3-2
Newcastle United booked a historic place in the Champions League last 16 by defeating Qarabag 3-2 at St. James’ Park, completing a 9-3 aggregate triumph over the two legs. The English side had already established a commanding 6-1 lead in last week’s first leg in Baku, making their qualification all but certain.
The match began in blistering fashion, with Newcastle striking twice within the opening eight minutes. Sandro Tonali opened the scoring in the fourth minute, followed by Joelinton’s goal just 80 seconds later, giving the hosts a comfortable 2-0 lead.
Despite the electric start, the goal rush seen in the first leg did not continue. Qarabag responded in the second half, with Camilo Duran reducing the deficit in the 51st minute. However, Newcastle quickly restored their two-goal cushion when Sven Botman headed home from a Kieran Trippier corner in the 52nd minute, marking his first goal in the Champions League.
Qarabag’s late fightback saw them score again through Elvin Jafarguliyev following a handball by Dan Burn, even after goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale saved Marco Jankovic’s penalty.
After the match, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe admitted, “After going 2-0 up, we eased off a little. The overall result across two legs is excellent, but today’s win feels slightly hollow.”
Newcastle will face either Barcelona or Chelsea in the Round of 16, with the draw scheduled for Friday. This marks the first time in the club’s history that they have reached the knockout stages of the Champions League.
Leverkusen’s Draw Suffices
Bayer Leverkusen also secured progression to the last 16, holding Olympiacos to a goalless draw in Greece, completing a 2-0 aggregate win. The German side had taken a comfortable lead in the first leg thanks to a brace from striker Patrik Schick.
During Tuesday’s stalemate, Alex Grimaldo struck the crossbar, the closest either team came to breaking the deadlock. Leverkusen goalkeeper Yanis Blaswich reflected on the achievement: “We’ve achieved our objective. Ahead, formidable teams like Bayern Munich or Arsenal await.”
Despite late pressure from Olympiacos, Leverkusen held firm to ensure their progression, demonstrating a disciplined defensive approach and tactical maturity.
