Neymar, the Brazilian football star and a key performer in the last three World Cups, now faces uncertainty regarding his participation in the 2026 tournament. The main concern is his knee injury. Six months before the World Cup, Neymar has taken a major decision about his health and future.
This morning, his club Santos played their final league match against Cruzeiro, securing a 3–0 victory. The win saved the team from relegation and confirmed their potential participation in the continental Copa Sudamericana.
Neymar suffered a meniscus injury on 25 November. Despite this, he played several matches, scoring five goals and providing one assist to ensure his team’s success. After the match, he announced that he will now undergo knee surgery.
Speaking to reporters, Neymar said, “I came to help as much as I could. It has been a very difficult few weeks. I am grateful to those who supported me. Without their help, I could not have played. Now I need rest, then the surgery will take place.”
Neymar’s appearances for the national team have been limited due to injuries. After sustaining a knee injury during the 2023 World Cup qualifier against Uruguay, he has not played for Brazil. Coach Carlo Ancelotti stated that Neymar must be fully fit to return to the squad. During the World Cup draw, Ancelotti repeated the same message.
This decision by Neymar has created further uncertainty about his participation in the World Cup. However, his recent outstanding performances show that he has given his utmost effort for the team despite the injury.
