Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier has unexpectedly found himself at the centre of a social media controversy. The 24-year-old came under fire after liking a video posted by a far-right political party leader from the National Rally. Critics, including sections of the French media and football fans, accused him of supporting ‘fascist ideology.’
Chevalier, however, has offered a different explanation. In a statement on Instagram, he described the incident as “nothing more than an accidental like.” “I had a short nap before the match and while scrolling through posts afterwards, I accidentally liked a video. Suddenly, my name started circulating as if I represented a political ideology. This is extremely frustrating,” he said.
He added, “Those who know me understand that my family has always taught me respect, tolerance, and humanity. I have never and will never support any ideology of hate. That being said, the damage is done. I have been labelled a ‘fascist’ and even my family has been dragged into this. I do not want to be a victim, but some people have crossed the line.”
Chevalier started in PSG’s recent 3–2 league victory over Lyon. He acknowledged that the controversy has even affected how people view his performance on the pitch. “Some are now questioning my abilities as a goalkeeper, but they don’t understand the role. I take responsibility for my mistake and will continue striving to be a better person,” he said.
With Italian star Gianluigi Donnarumma’s move to Manchester City, Chevalier has been given more opportunities in PSG’s first team. While he is adjusting to new responsibilities on the pitch, this off-field controversy presents another significant challenge for the young goalkeeper.
