Lanning Shines, Rain Wins

Persistent showers over Melbourne robbed fans of a thrilling Women’s Big Bash League encounter, as the match between the Melbourne Stars and Adelaide Strikers at the Junction Oval was abandoned without a result. Despite the premature ending, the game provided moments of individual brilliance, most notably from the returning Meg Lanning, whose elegant strokeplay hinted at her prime form.

After being sent in to bat, Lanning struck a fluent 60 from 41 deliveries, peppered with nine boundaries and a six, effortlessly anchoring the Stars’ innings. She was ably supported by Annabel Sutherland, who remained unbeaten on 54 from 39 balls, and Danielle Gibson, who unleashed a rapid 31 off just 15 balls. Their combined effort propelled Melbourne to a competitive total of 184 for 5 in their 20 overs, a score that looked challenging under the overcast skies.

Amanda-Jade Wellington was a standout for the Strikers, picking up two wickets for just 20 runs, keeping the run rate in check during crucial middle overs. Her disciplined bowling hinted at Adelaide’s potential to mount a chase, should the rain have held off.

The Strikers’ innings began with promise, but Marizanne Kapp struck early, dismissing Tammy Beaumont for a second-ball duck. Laura Wolvaardt and Madeline Penna steadied the innings with measured batting, yet the weather had other plans. Heavy showers returned, making the outfield unplayable, and the umpires had no choice but to abandon proceedings after just 4.2 overs, leaving both sides and the crowd disappointed.

While the washout was frustrating, Lanning’s commanding return offered hope for the Stars, signalling that their captain is ready to lead the side through a demanding WBBL season. Fans will take solace from her performance, eager to see her continue in similar vein when conditions are kinder.
