New Zealand firmly established themselves in control of the Christchurch Test on day three, transforming a modest overnight lead into an unassailable position. At the start of play, the Black Caps were only 96 runs ahead of the West Indies, but by the close, they had stretched that advantage to a commanding 481 runs, leaving the visitors with an almost insurmountable challenge with two days remaining.
The standout performance came in the form of a colossal 279-run partnership between Rachin Ravindra, who blazed to 176, and Tom Latham, who calmly accumulated 145. Together, they turned a match that had begun in West Indies’ favour into a one-sided affair.
The day’s conditions were tailor-made for batting. After two bowler-friendly sessions, the pitch eased and offered true bounce, allowing the Kiwi pair to settle and build their innings methodically. Latham and Devon Conway quietly added 84 runs to their overnight partnership before Conway fell to a tame shot, cutting a loose delivery from Ojay Shields straight to deep point.
West Indies’ bowlers briefly lifted their intensity, with Justin Greaves troubling Kane Williamson and inducing a top-edge, yet the breakthrough did not come until Kemar Roach, brought on just before lunch, accounted for Williamson, catching an edge from a straighter delivery. At that stage, New Zealand’s lead was only 164.
The tide fully turned in the afternoon session. Ravindra, having survived early reprieves at 8 and 13, accelerated mercilessly, striking 27 boundaries and a six, while Latham moved smoothly to his 14th Test century. The pair consistently punished loose deliveries, particularly from Johann Layne, who endured a bruising spell, conceding 80 runs in 13 overs. By the time New Zealand took the second new ball, they were already 400 ahead.
Roach eventually broke the mammoth partnership when Latham edged an inswinger, and Shields dismissed Ravindra with a surprise yorker. Despite these late wickets, New Zealand had added 184 runs in the final session, leaving West Indies facing an almost impossible task of chasing a target they could scarcely imagine.
Brief scores: New Zealand 231 & 417/4 (Rachin Ravindra 176, Tom Latham 145; Kemar Roach 2-61) lead West Indies 167 by 481 runs.
