LONDON, March 12, 2025 (BSS/AFP) – Sheffield United moved to the top of the Championship table despite conceding a late goal in a 1-1 draw at home to Bristol City on Tuesday evening.
Burnley also missed the opportunity to leapfrog Leeds United into second place after being held to a 1-1 draw by West Bromwich Albion at Turf Moor.
Tyrese Campbell had given Sheffield United the lead in the second half, but Mark Sykes netted a last-minute equaliser, which boosted City’s chances of making the playoffs.
“I don’t think it was anything they didn’t deserve really. They controlled the game in the first half,” said Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder.
The Blades now sit one point ahead of Leeds, who will face Millwall at home on Wednesday.
Burnley’s run of seven consecutive clean sheets at home came to an end when John Swift’s free-kick gave the Baggies the lead. Zian Flemming quickly equalised for the Clarets after a mistake by West Brom goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith.
However, the night took a sour turn for Burnley as defender CJ Egan-Riley and manager Scott Parker were both sent off after the final whistle following an incident in which Egan-Riley appeared to kick William Lankshear.
Romaine Mundle’s superb equaliser salvaged a point for Sunderland in their 1-1 draw with Preston at the Stadium of Light, cancelling out Emil Riis’ 65th-minute opener.
In other matches, Matt Clarke and Marcus Harness scored in each half to help Derby County boost their survival hopes with a 2-0 victory over high-flying Coventry on Frank Lampard’s return to Pride Park.
Tommy Conway and Anfernee Dijksteel struck either side of half-time to secure a 2-1 win for Middlesbrough over Queens Park Rangers, moving them within three points of the playoff spots.
Sheffield Wednesday produced an impressive second-half comeback to defeat Norwich City 3-2 at Carrow Road, keeping their playoff ambitions alive.
In a crucial relegation battle, Luton Town claimed a vital 2-1 victory over Cardiff City, although the match was marred by an injury to Wales captain Aaron Ramsey, which could potentially rule him out of World Cup qualifying matches.
