Badale Opens Up About Dravid & Samson’s Departures from Rajasthan Royals
“I don’t sleep easy with the loss of Rahul Dravid and Sanju Samson, who’ve been personal friends for 15 years,” admits Rajasthan Royals (RR) owner Manoj Badale, though he insists that every decision made was transparent and for the benefit of the team.
Since the conclusion of IPL 2025, Rajasthan Royals have been at the centre of media buzz. Speculation about captain Sanju Samson’s departure grew louder by the day, followed by Rahul Dravid stepping down as head coach after just one year at the helm. As key management members moved on, the most dramatic news came when RR traded Samson to Chennai Super Kings in exchange for Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran.
How did RR, a team that had reached the IPL playoffs twice in the last four seasons and even made the final in 2022, end up in such turmoil?
In an exclusive interview, RR’s lead owner Manoj Badale explains the reasons behind these decisions and offers insights into why he believes the franchise remains strong and stable.
“What did you expect after IPL 2025 ended?”
“Definitely. What I had in mind after the 2025 season was to conduct the usual, thorough, independent review of why we performed so poorly. We do these reviews when we perform well, too,” says Badale. “The reality is that this was our worst season in 18 years. We needed to understand why and make the necessary changes for 2026.”
Badale also mentions that a structural review was conducted after the season, led by Stuart Lancaster (former England rugby coach), a decision that might surprise some considering his background in rugby.
“Samson’s Emotional Strain”
Badale reveals that Samson had been emotionally drained by the end of the 2025 season. “He didn’t use these exact words, but he expressed that he was drained of the emotional capital he had invested in the team,” says Badale.
“When a player of his calibre says he needs a fresh start, you listen. Sensing his emotional exhaustion, we worked with him to find a solution that would benefit both parties. In the end, we respected his desire for change.”
“Jadeja and Curran: The Trade That Could Strengthen RR”
Badale reflects on the decision to bring in Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran, calling it a smart move. “Jadeja is one of the most successful all-rounders in IPL history, and combining him with Curran strengthens our team in areas where we were weak. This trade is about balance,” says Badale.
While Jadeja may be eyeing the captaincy, Badale explains that the Royals are taking a methodical approach and have a few players, including Jadeja, who could be potential captains. But leadership will be decided after the auction.
