Sri Lanka Cricket Board to Donate 300m Rupees to Cyclone Victims

Cyclone Ditva has inflicted severe devastation across Sri Lanka, triggering fatal floods and landslides that have claimed at least 474 lives, while nearly 400 people remain unaccounted for. In response to this humanitarian crisis, the Sri Lankan government has launched the Rebuilding Sri Lanka Fund, aimed at providing immediate relief and long-term support to those affected.

As part of this national effort, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has pledged a contribution of 300 million rupees to the fund. In an official statement, the SLC Board emphasised its duty as a symbolic institution representing the nation, stating that the donation is intended to assist government-led initiatives to deliver emergency aid and restore essential public services in the hardest-hit areas.

“The contribution is aimed at bolstering the government’s efforts to rebuild the lives of those impacted by the cyclone,” the statement read. The board added that it considers the support a moral obligation, reflecting the sport’s close ties with the nation and its people.

Earlier, Sri Lankan cricketers had announced that all earnings from their tour of Pakistan would be donated to assist flood victims. Sanath Jayasuriya, head coach of the national team, described the crisis as “extremely grave” and said, “We are profoundly distressed by the situation. We are contributing our match fees and all income from the Pakistan tour to assist those affected by the floods. We must face this difficult period together.”

The collective action by the cricket board and players underscores the broader spirit of solidarity in the country, highlighting how national institutions and public figures are stepping forward to provide relief and support during one of Sri Lanka’s most challenging natural disasters in recent memory.
