Tanzid Surpasses Naeem to Set Record for Most T20 Runs in a Year

In the second T20 match against the West Indies held in Chattogram, Bangladesh opener Tanzid Hasan scored 61 runs off 48 balls. With a target of 150 runs, such an innings usually gives the team a strong chance of winning.

Unfortunately, other Bangladeshi batsmen failed to capitalize on the opportunity. Zaker Ali and Shamim Hossain struggled, and the team ultimately lost by 14 runs. It is natural that Tanzid would feel some disappointment over this defeat.

Nevertheless, Tanzid achieved a significant record in this match. He became Bangladesh’s highest run-scorer in T20s in a single calendar year. This year, Tanzid has scored 622 runs in 23 innings, with a strike rate of 135.21, an average of 29.61, and 6 fifties. Additionally, he has hit 34 sixes, the most by any Bangladeshi batsman in a single year.

Previously, this record was held by opener Mohammad Naeem, who scored 575 runs in 26 innings in 2021, with a strike rate of 100.34 and three fifties.

Following Naeem in the list is Liton Das. This year, Liton has scored 564 runs in 21 innings, with a strike rate of 132.70 and four fifties. Liton had also scored over 500 runs in 2022, with 544 runs at a strike rate of 140.20. Afif Hossain is another Bangladeshi to cross 500 runs in a year, scoring 500 in 2022 with a strike rate of 123.76.

On the other hand, experienced players like Mahmudullah, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Shakib Al Hasan have never reached the 500-run mark in a single year. Mahmudullah came closest with 496 runs in 2021 and also scored 414 in 2018. Both Mushfiqur and Shakib have never managed 400 runs in a year, with their highest being Mushfiqur 397 in 2018 and Shakib 349 in 2022.
