With 148 days to go before the commencement of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the coveted golden trophy will make a brief but much-anticipated stop in Dhaka today. As part of the ‘FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour by Coca-Cola’, the trophy will arrive in the Bangladeshi capital this morning, accompanied by Brazilian midfield legend Gilberto Silva, a former Arsenal star and member of Brazil’s 2002 World Cup-winning squad.
Airport Reception and Security Measures
The trophy will arrive on a chartered flight, touching down at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport via Pakistan and India. The official reception will be led by Tabith Awal, President of the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF). From the airport, the trophy will be transported under tight security to the Radisson Blu Hotel.
Unlike the 2022 trophy tour, this year there will be no public concert or exhibition. Only winners of Coca-Cola’s ‘Under the Cap’ campaign will have the exclusive opportunity to see and photograph the trophy in the afternoon.
Participation of Local Footballers Uncertain
Sources indicate that national team captain Jamal Bhuiyan and young forward Sheikh Morsalin may attend the event. However, domestic league fixtures may prevent other male and female players from participating. Fahad Karim, BFF Vice President and Chairman of the Marketing Committee, said:
“We are not certain which players will be present. The trophy will arrive in the morning and be received by Tabith Awal. There may be a short half-hour or one-hour session for BFF officials and invited guests. The event is intentionally brief.”
On the possibility of female footballers attending, he added:
“It is not confirmed. Players are currently with their clubs. Whether they can be released is up to the clubs, though last-minute changes may happen.”
A Glimpse of History
The trophy tour began in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with Italian football legend Alessandro Del Piero. This year, ahead of the expanded 48-team World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico in June–July, the trophy will visit 75 countries. Following its one-day Dhaka stop, the trophy will depart for South Korea tonight.
While Bangladesh may not yet feature on the global stage and the red-and-green jersey may not be on display, football fans in the country can experience the thrill of seeing the World Cup trophy up close—an unforgettable moment for a nation that lives and breathes the beautiful game.
