Two Australian women cricketers visiting India for the ICC Women’s World Cup have reportedly been sexually harassed in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. The incident occurred on Thursday morning while they were walking from their hotel to a café.
According to reports, the two members of the Australian women’s cricket team were staying at the Radisson Blu Hotel. On Thursday morning, they were walking through the Khajrana Road area to visit a café.
Indian police Sub-Inspector Nidhi Raghubanshi stated that a man on a motorcycle began following them. At one point, he inappropriately touched the cricketers and then quickly fled the scene.
Immediately after the incident, the two cricketers sent an SOS notification and contacted the team’s security manager, Danny Simmons. Simmons coordinated with local security officials and quickly arranged a vehicle to rescue them.
Later on Thursday evening, Danny Simmons filed a formal complaint at the MIG police station. An Assistant Commissioner of Police met with the two cricketers and recorded their statements.
Police said that a bystander had noted the motorcycle’s registration number at the time of the incident. Using this information, the police arrested a man named Aqil Khan. They also stated that Aqil has a previous criminal record, and the investigation is ongoing.
An FIR has been registered against the accused under Section 354 (criminal force to outrage a woman’s modesty) and Section 78 (stalking) of the Indian Penal Code.
