Uzbekistan Humiliates Bangladesh in Asian Games

In a dramatic conclusion at the Asian Games hockey qualifiers in Bangkok, Thailand, Bangladesh’s national team faced a shocking 1-1 draw against Uzbekistan. As the final whistle blew, the Uzbek players celebrated exuberantly on the turf, while Bangladesh’s Amirul and Kujur slumped in disbelief. The draw marked Uzbekistan’s first-ever point against Bangladesh at the international level, prompting jubilation from the Central Asian side.

Bangladesh has traditionally been a strong contender in the Asian Games hockey qualifiers, securing multiple championships in previous editions. Entering this tournament with high hopes for the title, the team now faces uncertainty regarding its participation in the main Asian Games event.

Despite a strong final performance, Bangladesh fell behind Uzbekistan on goal difference, relegating the team to third place in Group B. Sri Lanka secured the top position with six points, meaning that even if they lose their final match to Chinese Taipei, their qualification remains intact.

The national team now faces a decisive playoff to secure a place in the Asian Games. Victory in the first match of this classification round is essential; otherwise, they will compete for the fifth place, missing the main event.

According to the Asian Hockey Federation, twelve teams will compete in the upcoming Asian Games in Aichi, Nagoya, Japan, this September. Host nation Japan, alongside top-ranked India, Pakistan, Malaysia, South Korea, and China, will qualify directly, while the remaining six teams will secure their spots through qualifiers.

Bangladesh’s recent struggles continue a worrying trend. After suffering a rare defeat to Sri Lanka—its first in twenty years—the team managed only a draw against a historically weaker Uzbek side, who previously lost by margins of 8–10 goals. Former national captain Mamunur Rahman Chayan commented, “Uzbekistan has never been able to challenge us before. Today, they earned their first point, and we are left waiting for the Asian Games. This is deeply concerning.”

The match itself saw Uzbekistan take an early lead in the first quarter via a penalty corner, controlling play throughout. Bangladesh equalised only in the second minute of the final quarter through Amirul’s penalty stroke, but failed to seize the lead despite earning multiple penalty corners, leaving the team with yet another humiliating setback.
