Women’s Team Selection of Alleged Irregularities

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has officially addressed allegations of irregularities in the selection process of the Under-19 Women’s Cricket Team, following complaints raised by cricketer Ria Akter. After an in-depth review of all submitted documents, the BCB informed the National Sports Council (NSC) that no irregularities had occurred.

According to the BCB press release, Ria Akter sent a letter to the NSC on 8 September, raising concerns about the integrity and transparency of the Under-19 Women’s team selection. In response, the NSC requested a detailed explanation from the BCB on 17 September regarding the selection procedures and broader issues related to women’s cricket.

The press release cited internal administrative reasons for the nearly two-month delay in response, explaining that the BCB’s departments were largely engaged in the board’s internal elections, limiting their capacity to address the matter immediately. Following the 6 October election, the newly appointed executive committee reviewed the NSC correspondence and supporting documentation, meticulously evaluating the claims.

Ultimately, the BCB concluded that the selection process had been conducted fairly and transparently, with no evidence of wrongdoing. Furthermore, the press release clarified that the matters highlighted by Ria Akter, which included allegations raised in a past interview with former captain Jahanara Alam, would be reviewed by a five-member investigative committee to ensure thorough oversight.

Analysts suggest that the BCB’s detailed response and the establishment of an investigative committee underline the board’s commitment to integrity and accountability in women’s cricket. This process aims not only to resolve the present concerns but also to strengthen confidence among young players and the broader cricketing community in Bangladesh.
