Neymar’s Knee Surgery and World Cup Push

The gap between Neymar and a potential World Cup return has narrowed to just 66 days, placing the Brazilian forward under immense pressure to regain full fitness in time to secure a place in the national squad. With selection dependent on complete physical readiness under head coach Carlo Ancelotti, every training session and recovery protocol has taken on heightened significance.

His club, Santos, have now launched an intensive and carefully structured programme to maximise his chances of being available for selection. The plan centres on gradually reintegrating Neymar into competitive matches while ensuring his body can withstand sustained physical demands. The club’s medical and performance departments are working in close coordination to manage his workload.

Intensive club-led rehabilitation plan

Santos are reportedly aiming to field Neymar in nearly all remaining fixtures before Brazil’s pre-World Cup training camp begins. Across domestic and continental competitions, the club is scheduled to play 14 matches, with Neymar targeted to appear in at least 13 of them. However, careful rotation is expected to prevent overload, particularly in high-risk encounters.

The Brazilian national team’s preparatory camp is set to begin on 25 May at Granja Comary, while Ancelotti is expected to announce his provisional squad on 18 May. Neymar’s performance in the coming weeks will therefore be decisive.

Medical interventions and recovery strategy

Santos head coach Cuca confirmed that Neymar has recently undergone a knee procedure during the latest international break. The intervention, part of his ongoing recovery process, was described as strictly medical and conducted under specialist supervision.

In addition, Neymar has been treated using platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, a regenerative technique that utilises components of the player’s own blood to accelerate tissue healing and strengthen damaged ligaments. The treatment is aimed at improving durability in the affected knee joint.

Despite these interventions, Neymar has not reduced his personal commitment to recovery. He is currently undertaking double training sessions each day, focusing on strength, endurance and mobility work designed to prepare him for the demands of consecutive matches.

Key schedule and workload management

CategoryPlan and Details
Total matches before camp14 fixtures
Target Neymar participationAt least 13 matches
Rest strategySelective rotation in high-risk games
Training loadTwice-daily fitness and conditioning sessions
Medical treatmentKnee procedure + PRP therapy
Main objectiveFull fitness ahead of World Cup selection

Cuca explained that Neymar’s early rest in the Copa Sudamericana opener against Deportivo Cuenca was a deliberate decision to preserve his energy for the demanding run of fixtures ahead. He emphasised that the coaching staff, medical team and physiologists had jointly designed the recovery plan to ensure long-term sustainability rather than short-term gain.

Ongoing concerns and physical risks

Despite the structured approach, concerns remain over whether Neymar can safely endure such an intense schedule. At 34, the cumulative impact of injuries and repeated rehabilitation cycles has raised questions about his durability.

Certain fixtures present additional risk factors, particularly matches played on artificial surfaces. One such example is the anticipated clash against Palmeiras at Allianz Parque, where the playing surface could increase strain on his recovering knee.

Recent surgery and international absence

Cuca further revealed that Neymar’s most recent knee surgery took place during the latest FIFA international break. Following the procedure, he spent several days under medical observation before continuing his rehabilitation programme. The club confirmed that he did not participate in training during this period.

Neymar last featured for Brazil in October 2023, when he suffered a serious knee injury during a World Cup qualifier against Uruguay. Since then, recurring fitness setbacks have prevented his return to international football, while also limiting his appearances at club level.

With the World Cup approaching rapidly, Neymar’s immediate future now depends on whether this carefully calibrated recovery plan can deliver the required outcome: sustained fitness, consistent match exposure, and ultimately, selection for Brazil’s squad.
