The Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) has officially announced the postponement of its Annual General Meeting (AGM), which was originally scheduled to take place on 22 May 2026. Following an online executive committee meeting held on Sunday, 10 May, the federation decided to reschedule the significant administrative gathering until after the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This decision was influenced by a combination of logistical hurdles, incomplete financial documentation, and a congested international football calendar that sees many officials travelling abroad.
Audit Delays and Administrative Requirements
A primary factor necessitating the delay is the unavailability of critical financial documentation. According to federation statutes, a comprehensive audit report must be presented and approved during the AGM. However, the audit report for the 2025 fiscal year has not yet been finalised.
Once the draft report is completed by the appointed firm, it must undergo a rigorous internal review process by the relevant BFF standing committees. Federation officials have noted that this mandatory review requires at least one week to ensure transparency and statutory compliance. Given the current date, it was determined that completing these administrative steps before the 22 May deadline was no longer feasible.
Logistical Conflicts with Religious Festivals
Logistical considerations regarding the convenience of delegates from across the country also played a significant role in the executive committee’s decision. The religious festival of Eid-ul-Adha is projected to be observed on or around 27 June 2026.
Had the AGM proceeded on 22 May, representatives from distant districts would have faced significant travel difficulties returning to their homes amidst the pre-festival rush. Furthermore, the weeks leading up to Eid are traditionally a period of heightened personal, familial, and business activity for the federation’s delegates. By deferring the meeting, the BFF aims to ensure maximum attendance and avoid the travel congestion associated with the national holiday.
International Commitments and Global Football Calendar
The month of June represents one of the busiest periods in the global footballing calendar. The 2026 FIFA World Cup, hosted across Canada, Mexico, and the United States, begins in mid-June. A substantial number of BFF executives, as well as high-ranking officials from various domestic clubs, are expected to travel to North America to attend the tournament and participate in various FIFA-related functions.
On the pitch, the Bangladesh National Team also faces a demanding schedule in June. The “Bengal Tigers” are slated for international engagements, including a landmark fixture against San Marino—marking a rare opportunity for the national side to compete on European soil. Additionally, separate fixtures are being coordinated in Maldives, stretching the federation’s administrative and coaching resources. The executive committee concluded that holding a high-stakes AGM amidst such heavy international travel and match commitments would be counterproductive for all stakeholders.
Grassroots Activities to Proceed as Planned
Despite the postponement of the AGM, the federation confirmed that other scheduled developmental events will proceed. AFC Grassroots Football Day will be observed on 23 May 2026, just one day after the original AGM date. Following the BFF’s recent attainment of Silver Level membership in the AFC Grassroots Charter, the federation plans to host celebratory programmes across the country.
These activities will be decentralised, taking place in Dhaka as well as various districts, to promote youth participation and talent identification. A new, definitive date for the Annual General Meeting will be finalised following the World Cup final, once the 2025 audit is complete and the domestic football calendar allows for a focused and inclusive administrative session.
