Leicester Exit Looms for Hamza as Derby Show Interest

Bangladesh midfielder Hamza Choudhury could be heading for a new chapter in his club career, with English Championship side Derby County reportedly interested in securing his services from Leicester City.

According to a report by Mike McGrath, a respected transfer correspondent for The Telegraph, Derby have identified Hamza as a potential addition as they look to strengthen their midfield. The club are believed to be attracted by the 28-year-old’s ability to operate in more than one position, particularly in defensive midfield and at right-back.

There is, however, no confirmation yet that a deal is close. It remains unclear whether Derby have made a formal offer to Leicester or whether negotiations between the two clubs have begun. The nature of any potential move is also uncertain, with no indication so far as to whether Derby would seek a permanent transfer or attempt to bring Hamza in on loan.

Hamza remains under contract at Leicester until June 2027. With less than a year remaining on that agreement, the coming transfer period could be significant for both the player and the club. Leicester would have to weigh the sporting value of retaining him against the possibility of generating a transfer fee before his contract enters its final stages.

The difference in the two clubs’ current positions could also make a move appealing to Hamza. Leicester are competing in League One, the third tier of English football, while Derby are in the Championship, one level higher. A switch to Derby would therefore offer Hamza an opportunity to return to a higher level of domestic competition.

Hamza’s versatility is likely to be one of the factors behind Derby’s interest. Although he is primarily a defensive midfielder, he has also shown that he can play at right-back when required. Such flexibility can be particularly valuable over a long campaign, allowing a manager to use one player in different tactical roles depending on injuries, suspensions and match situations.

The potential move would represent another stage in a career that has been closely associated with Leicester. Hamza came through the club’s academy before making his first-team debut in 2015. He subsequently gained experience through loan spells at Burton Albion, Watford and Sheffield United, before returning to Leicester after his latest temporary spell.

His career has since taken on added significance in Bangladesh after he became part of the national team setup. His performances and regular involvement at club level have consequently attracted considerable attention among Bangladeshi supporters, making any change to his club future a subject of particular interest.

For now, though, Derby’s reported interest remains just that—interest. Neither Hamza nor Leicester City or Derby County has publicly confirmed a transfer agreement. Until an official offer, negotiation or announcement emerges, his future remains unresolved.

A move to Derby could give Hamza the chance to continue competing at Championship level, while Leicester would face a decision over whether to retain a versatile midfielder or consider a transfer while he still has contractual value. The next stage of the transfer process should provide a clearer indication of where the Bangladesh international will play his football next.
