BFF Seeks Government Support To Appoint Chris Coleman

The Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) remains in a state of high-level deliberation regarding the appointment of a new head coach for the national senior men’s team. While the federation had previously indicated that an official announcement would be made by tomorrow, a final decision has yet to be reached. The primary impediment to concluding negotiations remains the substantial financial commitment required to secure a high-profile technical staff, a challenge that has prompted the federation to seek direct intervention from the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

Negotiations with Chris Coleman and Financial Constraints

A prominent candidate at the forefront of the BFF’s shortlist is the former Welsh national team manager, Chris Coleman. Coleman, renowned for guiding Gareth Bale and the Wales squad to the semi-finals of Euro 2016, has reportedly expressed a professional interest in the vacancy. However, his appointment comes with significant fiscal implications.

If Coleman were to be appointed alongside his complete coaching entourage, the total monthly expenditure for the BFF would be approximately $35,000, which exceeds 5 million BDT. Currently, the federation’s internal budget allows for a maximum allocation of roughly $20,000 (approximately 2.5 million BDT) per month for the coaching position. This discrepancy of $15,000 has created a deadlock that the federation is unable to resolve independently.

In an effort to bridge this financial gap, BFF President Tabith Awal recently met with the State Minister for Youth and Sports, Aminul Haque. While the initial meeting was described as positive, the specific issue of the coach’s high remuneration remains unresolved. Consequently, the National Team Committee convened for another session today but concluded without a formal resolution. Tabith Awal is scheduled to meet with the State Minister again tomorrow in a bid to secure the necessary government funding to facilitate the deal.

Alternative Candidates and Secondary Shortlist

Should the financial negotiations for Chris Coleman prove unsuccessful, the federation has identified alternative candidates to lead the national side. Amongst the names under consideration are Bernd Stange and Thomas Dooley.

Thomas Dooley, aged 64, has recently resigned unexpectedly from his position as the head coach of the Guyana national team. Despite this sudden availability, Dooley is reportedly positioned lower on the BFF’s preferred hierarchy. The federation is prioritising a “high-profile” appointment to elevate the standard of the national game, making the financial hurdle the defining factor in the selection process.

The Role of the Ministry of Youth and Sports

The Ministry of Youth and Sports faces a complex decision regarding the BFF’s request for multi-million BDT subsidies. While the ministry acknowledged the importance of a high-calibre coach during previous discussions, it must balance such an expenditure against the needs of numerous other sports federations under its jurisdiction, many of which are in more precarious financial positions than football.

The ministry’s evaluation will likely centre on the feasibility and long-term benefit of investing heavily in a foreign coaching staff. Given the positive tone of the initial dialogue between the BFF President and the State Minister, the possibility of a government-backed deal remains open. However, if the ministry declines to provide the additional $15,000 per month, the BFF will be forced to pivot towards a candidate whose salary aligns with their existing $20,000 threshold.

The outcome of tomorrow’s meeting between Tabith Awal and Aminul Haque is expected to be the final determining factor. Once the financial ceiling is established, the BFF will proceed to formalise the contract, ending the prolonged speculation over the leadership of the Bangladesh national football team.
