Turkish giants Fenerbahçe have ended an eighteen-year absence from the elite stage of European football, securing a dramatic qualification for the UEFA Champions League group stage. Securing a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Olympique Lyonnais at Groupama Stadium on Wednesday night, the Istanbul club triumphed 3-2 on aggregate following a tense playoff tie.
With the first leg in Istanbul ending in a 1-1 stalemate, Fenerbahçe travelled to France facing a daunting task with no margin for error. Opting for a bold, front-foot approach from the opening whistle, the visitors caught Lyon off guard. The breakthrough arrived in the 24th minute when Oğuz Aydın delivered a teasing cross into the penalty area. Though Vedat Muriqi’s initial header was parried by Lyon goalkeeper Dominik Greif, the Kosovo international reacted fastest to bundle the rebound home, silencing the home crowd.
Fenerbahçe doubled their advantage just four minutes later, stunning the French side once more. Mason Greenwood swung in a pinpoint corner kick, allowing defender Archie Brown to rise highest and power a header past the stranded goalkeeper. Heading into the interval with a commanding 2-0 cushion, the Turkish visitors appeared firmly in control of the tie.
Olympique Lyonnais emerged for the second half with renewed intensity, desperate to salvage their European campaign. Their persistence paid off in the 61 minute when Ainsley Maitland-Niles unlocked the defence with a clever pass, setting up Malick Fofana to reduce the deficit to 2-1 and inject fresh life into the match.
Sustained pressure from the hosts nearly brought them level shortly after. Lois Openda found the back of the net in the 64th minute, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside following a VAR review. Just minutes later in the 71st minute, Kyle Budach thought he had equalised, but his strike was similarly chalked off by the video assistant referee for a foul in the buildup.
Fenerbahçe managed to weather the late storm and successfully defended their slender lead until the final whistle, confirming a famous 3-2 aggregate triumph.
