England forward Harry Kane has described the national team as one of the strongest in its history as they prepare for the upcoming World Cup, while stating that they will enter the tournament as one of the main contenders to end the country’s 60-year wait for a major international title.
Kane, who plays for Bayern Munich, said that the combination of experienced players and emerging talent within the squad has created a strong sense of confidence ahead of the competition. He added that the overall depth of the squad, including both the starting eleven and the players available on the bench, places England among the leading sides expected to challenge for the trophy.
He said: “I think our squad is the best so far.”
He further explained that England’s strength across all areas of the squad gives them a competitive edge. “I think if you look at the starting eleven and the players coming off the bench, you will see that we are going to the tournament as one of the favourites. There is always something special about playing in the World Cup,” he said.
Kane also highlighted the emotional and sporting significance of the tournament, stressing that success at the World Cup carries importance not only for the players but also for supporters and the country as a whole. He stated that this shared responsibility serves as a driving force for the team.
“It creates a special feeling inside, especially when you win. We know how important winning the World Cup is, not just for us but for the fans and the whole country,” he said. “That is what drives us, and we hope we can bring the trophy home for the country.”
The forward also spoke about his personal form, saying he is currently performing at what he considers the highest level of his career. He emphasised that his main motivation is winning matches rather than achieving individual records, adding that personal milestones only matter when they contribute to team success.
Reflecting on his past achievements, Kane referred to winning the Golden Boot at the 2018 World Cup, noting that he was younger at the time. He said: “When I won my first Golden Boot at the 2018 World Cup, I was quite young. I now see myself as a much more complete footballer. And to be honest, I think I am playing the best football of my career at the moment.”
England’s only major international tournament victory remains their 1966 World Cup triumph. Since then, the national team has been unable to secure another global title, a record that continues to shape expectations and pressure ahead of each major tournament.
Kane’s comments reflect the growing belief within the squad that current experience, tactical balance, and squad depth could position England strongly in their bid to finally end their long wait for international glory.
