“Afeida Khandaker was the captain before Bangladesh left for Thailand,” Kiron stated. “Following two weeks of intensive training and performance evaluation there, the head coach decided to select Maria as the captain. This change has been made entirely based on the coach’s decision.”
The national team had undergone a crucial preparation camp in Thailand to acclimatise and sharpen their tactical approaches before travelling directly to India for the championship. According to the team management, Coach Butler utilised the fortnight-long camp to evaluate player dynamics, fitness levels, and leadership qualities on the pitch, ultimately concluding that Manda’s experience was best suited to guide the team through a challenging title defence.

The eighth edition of the SAFF Women’s Championship is scheduled to commence on Monday afternoon, 25 May, with an opening fixture between Bhutan and Nepal. Later that evening, the host nation, India, will begin their campaign against the Maldives.
