The Bangladesh Under-20 national football team has set its sights on long-term international success, driven by an unyielding winning mentality. Speaking during a media briefing following a residential training session at the Shamsul Huda Football Academy in Jashore on Sunday at noon, head coach Gerard Amlin Jones and new recruit Adam Abbas outlined the squad’s strategic roadmap and comprehensive preparations.
Head coach Jones explained that the extended training camp has provided an invaluable opportunity to thoroughly evaluate individual player capabilities. Looking beyond immediate commitments, the technical staff are meticulously designing a sustainable framework tailored for upcoming international tournaments across both the Under-17 and Under-20 categories.
As part of their rigorous build-up, the squad has already contested more than four friendly matches. These fixtures have enabled players to bolster their physical endurance, refine tactical positioning, and adapt to high-pressure match scenarios. Emphasising adaptability, Jones noted that regardless of pitch conditions or environmental challenges, the core philosophy remains unchanged: embracing a positive attitude to extract peak performances and secure victories for the nation.
Addressing the addition of new talent, the coach praised 19-year-old Adam Abbas, describing him as a deeply professional, humble, and eager learner. The coaching staff harbour specific developmental plans to mould the young prospect into a potent goalscorer and a reliable cornerstone of the attacking line.
Sharing his personal excitement, Abbas expressed immense pride in earning the opportunity to represent Bangladesh on the international stage. He commended the tireless dedication displayed by the national players, assistant coaches, and technical staff. He also highlighted that watching young diaspora talents like Hamza Chowdhury and Yasin Alfi Reza feature for national setups served as a profound source of inspiration for his own international journey.
Looking ahead, Abbas stressed that performing strongly on grand stages, such as the upcoming AFC Asian Cup, remains the ultimate objective for the group. Pointing to the harmonious relationship between the players and the coaching hierarchy, he expressed confidence that collective labour and steadfast unity will eventually steer the national team towards historic milestones.
Born of Bangladeshi heritage, Abbas travelled directly from England to join the training camp in Dhaka. Primarily operating as a right winger, the versatile 19-year-old can seamlessly slot into a central forward or number nine role when required. Notably, his developmental years include notable stints within the youth setups of English clubs Manchester United and Burnley, bringing a wealth of elite-level exposure to the national camp.
