Martinez Fined Despite Apology as United Future Comes Under Cloud
Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has apologised for criticising the club’s management and squad-building strategy following their defeat by Atletico Madrid. However, the Argentina international has still been fined over his comments, according to the BBC, while his long-term future at Old Trafford remains uncertain.
United suffered a 2-0 defeat against Atletico in the Champions League on Tuesday night. Speaking after the match, Martinez expressed frustration that head coach Michael Carrick had not been provided with a sufficiently strong squad to compete at the highest level.
The 28-year-old centre-back also called for greater investment in the squad and said he expected more from technical director Jason Wilcox. His remarks sparked fresh debate about United’s recruitment policy, the quality of the squad and the support being provided to the coaching staff.
Following the controversy, Martinez met the club’s leadership and coaching staff on Thursday to discuss his comments and the reaction they had provoked. After the meeting, he issued a statement on social media, describing the discussion as positive and acknowledging that his response to the defeat had been inappropriate.
“Today I met with the club’s leadership and the coach. It was a very positive discussion, where we were able to exchange views and speak openly about what happened after Tuesday’s match,” Martinez said.
The Argentine defender explained that his emotions had influenced his reaction to the disappointing result. He acknowledged that, although his passion for football was well known, he had chosen an inappropriate time and setting to express his frustration.
“Everyone knows that I am an emotional person and that I live football intensely. In the frustration of losing, I expressed my feelings at a time and in a place that may not have been right, and for that I apologise,” he added.
Martinez later clarified that anger and disappointment had driven his comments. He also stressed the importance of unity within the club, admitting that his words had not helped maintain that spirit.
The defender said Manchester United performed at their best when everyone stood together, acknowledging that his remarks had not contributed positively to the situation.
Despite the apology, United have reportedly imposed a financial penalty on Martinez. According to the BBC, the club took disciplinary action over the incident, underlining the seriousness with which it has treated his public criticism.
Former United captain Roy Keane has also voiced concerns about the club’s current situation. Speaking on The Overlap podcast, Keane described the circumstances at Old Trafford as “a bit of a circus”, adding to the criticism surrounding the club’s management and direction.
Attention has now turned to United’s upcoming Premier League fixture against Leeds United on Sunday. It remains unclear whether head coach Carrick will include Martinez in his starting line-up following the controversy. No official decision on his selection has been confirmed.
The defender’s long-term future at Old Trafford is another source of uncertainty. His current contract with United is due to expire at the end of the season, although the club has the option to extend it by a further 12 months. Reports suggest there are doubts over whether United will exercise that option.
The situation comes during a difficult period for the club. United collected just six points from their first six Premier League matches this season, recording their worst start to a league campaign in 40 years. They were sitting 13th in the table, highlighting the challenges facing the team.
With results on the pitch falling short of expectations and questions being raised about the club’s management, Martinez’s public criticism has added another complication for United. The club must now address the disciplinary issue while working to improve performances and restore stability within the squad.
Although Martinez’s apology may help ease tensions, the reported fine indicates that United have taken a firm stance. His involvement against Leeds and the club’s eventual decision on his contract could provide further clues about his position at Old Trafford and whether he remains part of its long-term plans.
