Claudio Echeverri is seeking regular first-team football after completing a loan move to Portuguese giants Benfica, bringing a temporary halt to a frustrating period of limited appearances since joining Manchester City. Despite putting pen to paper on a four-and-a-half-year deal with the Premier League champions in January 2024, the highly rated Argentine attacking midfielder has featured just once in a competitive fixture for Pep Guardiola’s side. Instead of establishing himself at the Etihad Stadium, his development has been managed through a series of temporary spells away from Manchester, including stints in German and Spanish football.
Arriving in Lisbon to finalise the agreement, the youngster was reportedly influenced by encouraging advice from City teammates Rúben Dias and Bernardo Silva regarding their former club. According to reports from the Portuguese sports newspaper A Bola, the loan arrangement also includes an option for Benfica to make the transfer permanent, providing the talented playmaker with a stable platform to flourish. Prior to this switch to the Primeira Liga, Echeverri gained brief European exposure with short-term spells at Bayer Leverkusen and Spanish side Girona. Across Manchester City, Leverkusen, and Girona, regular starting berths proved difficult to secure, leaving the teenager largely frustrated on the bench.
At Benfica, however, he is expected to feature prominently within the tactical plans, where he has been handed the prestigious number 10 shirt. The move marks a crucial phase for a player who first captured global attention during the 2023 South American Under-17 Championship. During that tournament, he finished as the joint-top scorer with five goals and three assists. Later that year, he cemented his reputation on the international stage by scoring a memorable hat-trick against arch-rivals Brazil in the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Indonesia. Having spent his recent career navigating loan spells and limited minutes, Echeverri now arrives in Portugal with renewed optimism and the firm expectation of securing regular minutes on the pitch.
