Bangladeshi-American midfielder Kavan Sullivan has added another remarkable achievement to his rapidly developing football career, becoming the youngest player in Major League Soccer (MLS) history to win the league’s Player of the Month award.
Sullivan, aged 17 years and two days, recently made his debut for the United States national team. He has now followed that milestone with a record-breaking individual honour after an outstanding run of form for Philadelphia Union during September.
The teenager scored four goals and provided five assists for Philadelphia Union during the month, contributing directly to nine goals. That was the highest combined goal contribution in MLS during September and played a central role in earning him the monthly award.
Sullivan’s achievement also rewrites a record that had stood since 2020. In August that year, Orlando City striker Daryl Dike became the league’s youngest Player of the Month when he received the award at the age of 20 years and 98 days. Sullivan has surpassed that mark while still several years younger than Dike was at the time.
The award is another significant chapter in a career that has progressed at an exceptional pace. Sullivan first made headlines two years ago when he became the youngest player to appear in MLS. Since then, he has continued to develop within Philadelphia Union and has increasingly established himself as an influential attacking midfielder.
His September statistics underline the range of his contribution. Four goals demonstrated his ability to finish attacks, while five assists highlighted his role in creating opportunities for teammates. A total of nine direct goal contributions placed him at the top of the league for the month.
Sullivan also has a notable connection with Bangladesh through his family. His older twin brothers, Ronan Sullivan and Declan Sullivan, have represented Bangladesh at under-20 level and were part of the team that won the SAFF Championship. Kavan, the youngest of the four brothers, has taken a different international route, representing the United States.
His recent senior international debut marked another important step. Playing for the United States at such a young age has brought further attention to his development, while his latest MLS award provides another indication of the impact he is already having at club level.
For Philadelphia Union, Sullivan’s September performances have made him an increasingly important figure in the attacking setup. For the young midfielder himself, the latest award adds to a growing list of milestones that began with his record-breaking MLS debut.
At just 17, Sullivan has already combined an early senior international appearance with two major MLS age records. His latest achievement ensures that his name will remain part of the league’s record books while his professional career is still in its early stages.
