France World Cup winner Olivier Giroud has indicated that his playing career could be nearing its end, with the veteran forward suggesting that the current campaign may be his final season as a professional footballer.
Now approaching 40, Giroud reflected on his future in an interview with French newspaper L’Équipe, acknowledging that he is likely to bring his long playing career to a close. The experienced striker said: “As a player, I think very likely this is going to be my last season.”
Giroud also made clear that he is determined to enjoy the remaining time of his career. With retirement increasingly on the horizon, the Frenchman said he was trying to make the most of every moment on the pitch.
The possibility of Giroud’s retirement marks a significant moment for French football. He has been one of the country’s most recognisable forwards of his generation and played a major role in France’s success at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
Giroud made 137 appearances for France and scored 57 goals. For several years, he held the record for the most goals in the history of the French national team. He surpassed Thierry Henry during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, moving to the top of the scoring charts after a long international career.
That record has since been taken by another generation-defining French forward, Kylian Mbappé. Giroud now stands behind Mbappé on France’s all-time scoring list, but his 57 international goals remain a major part of his legacy.
His club career has also been marked by major honours across several of Europe’s leading leagues. Giroud won a league title with Montpellier in France before adding another domestic championship with AC Milan in Italy.
His most significant club achievement came in England with Chelsea. In 2021, he was part of the Chelsea side that lifted the Champions League trophy, securing European football’s premier club honour.
Giroud also enjoyed considerable success with Arsenal, where he won the FA Cup three times. Across his career, he collected four FA Cup winners’ medals, adding another major achievement to a résumé that spans domestic and international football.
