Braving a 4-0 Defeat, India Wins Hearts Against Brazil in Kolkata
At the iconic Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata, the Indian national football team put up a spirited fight before ultimately suffering a 4-0 defeat against five-time world champions Brazil in an international friendly match.
Before the fixture commenced, widespread discussions revolved around how many goals India would concede against the footballing powerhouse. Despite letting in four goals, the resilience and effort displayed by the Indian players successfully won the hearts of the fans and supporters. Playing on home turf, the boys fought to the best of their abilities, providing a commendable exhibition of grit.
Even though India lost the match, the nearly 50,000 spectators gathered in the stands were thoroughly captivated by the performance of Ryan, Manvir, and their teammates. For the crowd, the occasion transcended the final scoreline; it was a rare and mesmerizing spectacle to witness world-class Brazilian superstars performing live right before their eyes. Seeing players of elite caliber, such as Vinícius Júnior, orchestrating plays with the ball at their feet on Indian soil proved to be an unforgettable experience for football enthusiasts. The spectators thoroughly relished the overarching contest rather than merely fixating on the result.
The atmosphere inside the stadium electrified early in the match when Indian goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu brilliantly blocked an initial strike from Vinícius Júnior, prompting a massive roar from the crowd. However, the Brazilian onslaught could not be contained indefinitely. In the 28th minute, Estêvão secured the opening goal by unleashing a powerful left-footed shot from the right side of the penalty box. Although the ball came within Gurpreet’s reach, its sheer velocity meant the goalkeeper could do little to prevent it; it clipped his underside and found its way past the goal line.
Estêvão orchestrated another dangerous opportunity in the 42nd minute. He delivered a brilliant pass into the box to Pedro, who had ample time to line up his shot. As Pedro struck the ball, Gurpreet attempted to block it by extending his leg, but it deflected off his right glove and settled into the back of the net.
Following the interval, Samuel Lino replaced Vinícius Júnior and made an immediate impact by scoring twice in the second half. In the 58th minute, Lino received a pass from Mauro Júnior on the left flank, drove into the penalty box, carved out space for his right foot, and struck a powerful shot past the custodian. He capped off the match by scoring his second goal in the absolute dying moments, just before the referee blew the final whistle.
