Messi Avoids Suspension Despite Reaching Five Yellow Cards
Under MLS rules, a player who accumulates five yellow cards during the regular season is normally suspended for the following match and fined $250. Messi appeared to have reached that threshold during Inter Miami’s 2-2 draw against Cincinnati last Wednesday, when he was booked in the 44th minute.
However, the five-card total does not tell the whole story. MLS operates a ‘Good Behaviour Incentive’ system, under which players can have one yellow card removed from their disciplinary tally after completing five consecutive matches without receiving a yellow card, a red card or any additional disciplinary punishment.
The provision can be applied up to three times during the regular season, giving players an opportunity to reduce their accumulated disciplinary points through consistent conduct.
Messi had already completed more than five consecutive matches without a booking before receiving his latest yellow card. As a result, one of his previous cautions had already been removed from the total used to determine suspension eligibility. Although the original booking remains part of his disciplinary record, it no longer counts towards the threshold for an automatic suspension.
The 38-year-old has benefited from the provision on three separate occasions this season. Consequently, despite having received five yellow cards in total, his effective disciplinary tally currently stands at just two.
Messi’s disciplinary record has fluctuated throughout the campaign. At the beginning of the season, he completed more than five matches without receiving a booking. However, the league’s regulations do not allow a player’s adjusted yellow-card tally to fall below zero.
He subsequently received two yellow cards in separate matches. A five-match run without another booking reduced his effective tally to one. Another caution then brought the figure back to two.
The Argentine went on to play 10 consecutive matches without receiving a yellow card, allowing his effective total to return to zero through the incentive system. However, two bookings in his last three appearances have taken the adjusted figure back up to two.
This explains why Messi can feature against New England despite having accumulated five yellow cards over the course of the campaign. His overall disciplinary record and the tally used to determine suspension are not necessarily the same under MLS regulations.
Crucial encounter in the race for continental qualification
Messi’s availability is particularly important for Inter Miami, who face a significant test against New England Revolution as they pursue qualification for next season’s CONCACAF Champions Cup.
Inter Miami head coach Cristian Gonzalez has stressed that his side cannot afford to drop unnecessary points during the closing stages of the regular season. With qualification places still at stake, every remaining fixture carries considerable importance.
Miami currently sit third in the Eastern Conference standings with 56 points from 32 matches. New England Revolution occupy second place with 58 points from the same number of games, while Nashville lead the conference with 71 points after 32 matches.
Both Inter Miami and New England have already secured their places in the 2026 MLS play-offs. Their attention, however, is also focused on securing a place in the next edition of the continental competition.
The CONCACAF Champions Cup is one of the region’s leading club competitions, bringing together qualifying teams from North America, Central America and the Caribbean. MLS clubs can secure places through several domestic competitions and league achievements, including the MLS Cup, Leagues Cup, US Open Cup and MLS Supporters’ Shield. Qualification opportunities are also available through the Eastern and Western Conference standings.
Nashville have already secured the Supporters’ Shield, creating an additional qualification opportunity for the next eligible team from the Eastern Conference. This has made the battle for the remaining positions particularly significant.
With only a narrow points gap separating Inter Miami and New England, Monday’s meeting could have a considerable impact on the final standings and Miami’s continental ambitions.
For Inter Miami, having their captain available is a welcome boost. Messi’s presence offers the side an important attacking option in a match where the margin for error is limited. Having avoided suspension through MLS’s good-behaviour provision, the Argentine will now be expected to play a key role as Miami attempt to strengthen their position before the regular season concludes.
