Emiliano Martínez Played World Cup Final with a Broken Finger

Argentine footballing icon Emiliano Martínez has revealed a staggering toll behind his heroic performances on the global stage. During the 2026 World Cup final against Spain, the Aston Villa goalkeeper stood virtually alone against a relentless Spanish onslaught, pulling off eleven remarkable saves to deny the likes of Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams, and Mikel Merino. However, in a recent interview, Martínez disclosed that he endured the entire tournament—and that high-stakes final—playing with a broken and dislocated finger, resulting in permanent physical damage to his hand.

Demonstrating the injury on camera during the interview, the goalkeeper showed that he can no longer fully close his right hand. His ring finger remains permanently partially extended, a structural deformation that medical professionals have confirmed is irreversible. Martínez explained that the bone shifted and fractured during the incident, healing in a displaced position that restricts normal movement for the rest of his life. Displaying his trademark humour amidst the grim reality, he quipped that he would never be able to throw a proper punch again.

The origin of the injury dates back to May 2026, during the warm-up ahead of Aston Villa’s crucial Europa League fixture against Freiburg. While preparing for the match, Martínez suffered a fracture to the ring finger on his right hand. Despite the excruciating injury, he played through the entire match, helping Aston Villa secure a commanding 3-0 victory.

Following the match, specialists informed him that immediate surgery was necessary for the bone to heal correctly. They warned that declining the operation would permanently limit his hand mobility and athletic capacity. Faced with a heartbreaking dilemma, Martínez chose to forego surgery. His burning ambition to represent Argentina at the 2026 World Cup overrode concerns for his long-term physical health, knowing that an operation would have ruled him out of the tournament entirely.

Managing the severe pain and structural instability, Martínez arrived at the World Cup camp determined to push through. He trained apart from the main squad during the early stages and utilised specialised protective splints and modified gloves to safeguard his hand during matches.

His sacrifice carried Argentina deep into the tournament, culminating in a tense showdown against Spain in the final. Despite his heroic display of eleven saves, Argentina ultimately fell short in a narrow 1-0 defeat. Prior to that heartbreaking loss, his stellar performances—including clean sheets during the group stages—underpinned Argentina’s run. While his decision to avoid surgery cost him permanent physiological integrity, it granted him the chance to fight for his country on the world’s biggest stage.
