Messi Rewrites MLS History With Consecutive Golden Boot Wins
Lionel Messi has achieved another remarkable milestone in his illustrious career, becoming the first player in Major League Soccer (MLS) history to win the Golden Boot in consecutive seasons. The Inter Miami captain secured the prestigious award after scoring 26 goals in 31 appearances during the 2026 regular season, extending his influence on American football.
The Argentine superstar first claimed the MLS Golden Boot in 2025, when he scored 29 goals in 28 matches. His latest success makes him the first player to retain the league’s top goalscorer award in successive campaigns. Although five players had previously won the Golden Boot more than once, none had managed to do so in consecutive seasons.
Messi’s scoring record placed him comfortably ahead of his closest competitors in 2026. FC Dallas forward Petar Musa finished second with 22 goals, while Nashville’s Sam Surridge occupied third place with 21. The four-goal gap between Messi and Musa underlined the Argentine’s consistency throughout the campaign.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner was equally influential in creating goals for his team-mates. He registered 17 assists during the season, taking his combined tally of goals and assists to 43. No other player in the league recorded a higher direct contribution to goals during the campaign. Messi had also led the MLS assists chart in 2025, finishing that season with 19.
His performances have demonstrated that his value to Inter Miami extends well beyond his ability to score. Whether finishing attacking moves or creating opportunities for others, Messi has remained central to the club’s attacking approach. His contribution has been particularly significant in maintaining Miami’s competitiveness throughout the regular season.
Inter Miami concluded their regular-season fixtures with a 3-3 draw against Charlotte FC on Sunday, 8 November. Miami appeared to be heading towards a comfortable victory after establishing a 3-0 lead in the first half. However, Charlotte produced a strong response after the interval, scoring three times to secure a share of the points.
Although Messi failed to score in the match, he played an important role in creating Miami’s first two goals through his corner kicks. The result brought the club’s regular-season campaign to an end with 60 points and second place in the Eastern Conference standings.
Finishing second has secured Inter Miami home advantage in the opening round of the MLS play-offs. They are set to face seventh-placed Columbus Crew in a best-of-three series. Playing in front of their home supporters could prove valuable as Miami attempt to progress through the post-season competition.
Messi’s individual achievements may not end with the Golden Boot, however. He is also in contention for the MLS Most Valuable Player (MVP) award, having won the honour in both 2024 and 2025. His performances this season have once again placed him among the leading candidates.
Should he win the MVP award for a third successive year, Messi would become the first player in MLS history to achieve that distinction. It would be another extraordinary accomplishment in a career that has already included numerous individual awards and major team honours.
At 39, Messi continues to demonstrate his exceptional footballing ability in one of the most competitive periods of his career. His goalscoring instincts, vision and creativity remain central to Inter Miami’s ambitions. With consecutive Golden Boot triumphs already secured, the Argentine will now be looking to translate his individual success into another memorable play-off campaign for the club.
