Bangladesh kick off SAFF campaign with narrow win over Bhutan
Bangladesh began their SAFF Championship campaign on a confident note, securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Bhutan courtesy of a crucial second-half goal by substitute forward Ibrahim. The red and greens maintained territorial dominance from the opening whistle, asserting their intent on a successful tournament run right from the onset.
The match unfolded with Bangladesh controlling the tempo and applying consistent pressure through the flanks. Despite orchestrating numerous attacking moves, the team failed to break the deadlock in the opening forty-five minutes. Viswanath squandered a couple of promising opportunities, while Bhutan’s disciplined defensive block held firm under mounting pressure. As the half progressed, Bangladesh diversified their approach by orchestrating plays through the central midfield and testing the opposition goalkeeper with long-range efforts.
Statistical indicators from the first half reflected Bangladesh’s territorial superiority. They enjoyed 64 percent of the possession, leaving Bhutan restricted to just 36 percent. The attacking intent was evident as Bangladesh unleashed 12 shots compared to Bhutan’s 4, although both sides managed an identical two shots on target. Despite the clear statistical advantage, the scoreboard remained blank at the interval.
The second half witnessed a continuation of Bangladesh’s relentless attacking pressure. Tactical adjustments and fresh legs introduced by the coaching staff paid dividends in the 69th minute. Substitute forward Ibrahim capitalized on a golden opportunity inside the penalty area after a well-delivered cross into the box. Somit Som met the initial cross with a header, looping the ball awkwardly into a crowded goalmouth where Ibrahim reacted quickest. He cleverly poked the ball past the scrambling defence and into the back of the net, sealing the vital breakthrough for his side.
Although both teams fought valiantly for subsequent goals during the remainder of the fixture, the defensive lines tightened up and no further changes occurred to the scoreline. The final whistle confirmed a clean sheet and a valuable three points for the hosts, giving them a morale boost ahead of tougher fixtures in the tournament.
Looking ahead, Bangladesh will return to action on 11 November for their second group fixture against Sri Lanka, where they aim to cement their place in the next round. Meanwhile, elsewhere in the tournament on the opening day, India edged past Pakistan 3-2 in a thrilling Group B encounter.
