Joao Neves Eyes Entire Career at Paris Saint-Germain
Portuguese midfielder Joao Neves has no particular ambition to test himself in Spain’s La Liga or England’s Premier League, despite their status as two of European football’s most prestigious competitions. Instead, the 22-year-old wants to spend his entire professional career at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), where he hopes to continue winning major honours and building his reputation.
Speaking in an interview with French broadcaster Canal+, Neves offered a candid insight into his future ambitions and growing attachment to the Parisian club. The midfielder made it clear that moving to another major European league is not part of his plans. His priority is to remain happy, continue developing as a footballer and contribute to PSG’s success.
“I have absolutely no ambition to go to a club in Spain or England. My main objective is to be happy and feel good about my life, and to win one trophy after another with PSG. I want to spend my entire football career here,” Neves said.
His comments underline the strong connection he has developed with the French champions since arriving in Paris in 2024. Neves joined PSG from Portuguese side Benfica in a transfer reportedly worth around €70 million. The move represented a significant investment by the French club in one of Portugal’s most promising young midfielders.
Under head coach Luis Enrique, Neves has quickly established himself as an important member of the squad. His ability to combine defensive discipline with technical quality has made him a valuable presence in the middle of the pitch. Rather than simply operating as a defensive midfielder, he contributes to several aspects of PSG’s play, helping the team maintain possession, break up opposition attacks and move the ball forward effectively.
His work rate and awareness have also strengthened his position within Enrique’s tactical system. Neves is comfortable in possession, capable of delivering accurate passes and regularly involved in building attacking moves. He can also contribute directly to goals, either by finding the net himself or creating opportunities for his team-mates.
The midfielder’s commitment to PSG has been reflected in his contractual arrangements. He has recently extended his agreement with the club until 2031, providing a clear indication of the long-term relationship both parties intend to maintain. The extension also gives PSG greater security over a player who has become an important part of its midfield plans.
Neves has already reached another significant milestone by making his 100th appearance for the French giants. Reaching the century mark in a relatively short period highlights how quickly he has adapted to French football and established himself in one of Europe’s most competitive squads.
At just 22, the Portuguese international has many years of football ahead of him. His decision to express a desire to remain at PSG throughout his career is therefore a notable statement of intent. While transfers between Europe’s leading clubs are common, Neves appears more interested in building a lasting legacy in Paris than pursuing opportunities elsewhere.
For PSG, retaining a young midfielder of his quality could prove valuable as the club continues to pursue domestic and European success. Neves, meanwhile, has made his ambitions clear: he wants to keep developing in Paris, collect more silverware and, if circumstances allow, bring his professional football journey to an end in the same colours in which he hopes to achieve his greatest successes.
