Dhoni to Continue Playing in the IPL Even After Turning 44

Age seems to be nothing more than a number for Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Despite having crossed 44, the legendary Indian wicketkeeper and former captain is set to continue his journey in the glittering Indian Premier League (IPL). According to official confirmation, Dhoni will represent the Chennai Super Kings once again in the 2026 season, when he will be approaching 45.

Chennai Super Kings’ Chief Executive Officer, Kashi Vishwanathan, confirmed the development to Cricbuzz, stating,

“Yes, it’s true. MS has informed us that he will be available for next year’s IPL.”

Dhoni has been a part of Chennai Super Kings since the very first edition of the IPL in 2008. Vishwanathan, who has also been with the franchise since its inception, mentioned that while discussions about acquiring Sanju Samson were ongoing, Dhoni’s participation in the upcoming season was already assured.

Over the past few years, speculation has followed every IPL season regarding Dhoni’s future — whether he would play another year or finally hang up his boots. This time, however, the confirmation from the franchise’s top executive has put an end to the uncertainty: Dhoni will continue.

Should he appear in the 2026 edition, Dhoni will become the second-oldest cricketer in IPL history, after Australian spinner Brad Hogg, who played the 2016 tournament at the age of 45.

The previous IPL season was far from ideal for Chennai. With regular captain Ruturaj Gaikwad sidelined due to injury, Dhoni stepped in to lead the side. However, the team struggled throughout the competition and eventually finished near the bottom of the points table.

If Dhoni takes the field next year, it will mark his 17th season with Chennai Super Kings and 19th IPL campaign overall. So far, he has played 248 matches for the franchise, scoring 4,865 runs. Under his leadership, Chennai Super Kings have lifted the IPL trophy five times — in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023.
