A tragic incident struck Spanish football on Sunday night when an elderly spectator collapsed and died while watching a match. The heartbreaking news, announced over the loudspeakers, led to the immediate suspension of the game by the referee.
The incident occurred during a Spanish Second Division fixture between Ceuta and Almería. The match had been finely poised at 1–1 when the referee halted play following reports of a medical emergency in the stands.
In the 17th minute, the 73-year-old supporter suffered a cardiac arrest, prompting the referee to stop play as medical personnel rushed to the scene. Red Cross paramedics and stadium doctors attempted to revive the fan, administering CPR for several minutes. The supporter was later carried out on a stretcher to a waiting ambulance, but despite their best efforts, he was pronounced dead before reaching hospital.
After a delay of nearly ten minutes, the referee allowed the match to resume, but just before the half-time whistle, an official announcement confirmed the fan’s death. Referee Alejandro Morilla then decided to call off the match completely, with players and supporters visibly shaken.
Before the tragedy unfolded, Ceuta had taken an early lead in the second minute through a goal from Kuki Zalazar. Almería equalised in the 36th minute thanks to a well-placed free kick from Adrián Embarba, but celebrations were short-lived as news of the fatal incident spread across the stadium.
In a statement issued later, the Spanish League authorities confirmed that the fixture would be rescheduled and completed on a new date.
The football community across Spain has since expressed its condolences to the family of the deceased supporter, with both clubs observing a moment of silence in his honour.
