The football world has been left deeply concerned after Brazilian midfielder Oscar dos Santos was hospitalised following a sudden cardiac incident. The 34-year-old São Paulo midfielder reportedly fell ill on Tuesday during a routine fitness test at the club’s Barra Funda Training Centre.
Oscar was rushed by ambulance to Albert Einstein Hospital in São Paulo, where he received emergency treatment. According to medical staff, his condition is now stable and he remains under close observation in the hospital’s cardiology unit. Brazilian outlet Globo reported that he is undergoing continuous medical follow-up as doctors work to determine the cause of his heart complications.
Medical Investigation and Recovery
Doctors have confirmed that Oscar is undergoing several tests to pinpoint the cause of his cardiac distress. His heart rhythm is being continuously monitored through a Holter device. Initially reluctant to undergo the procedure, Oscar later agreed on his physicians’ advice.
In a heartfelt post on Instagram, Oscar thanked his fans and well-wishers:
“Thank you all for your messages and prayers. By God’s grace, everything will be fine.”
His mother and sister have also asked supporters to keep him in their thoughts. Meanwhile, Chelsea FC issued a statement saying:
“Everyone at Chelsea is thinking of our former player Oscar. We stand with him and his family during this difficult time.”
Uncertain Return to Football
Whether Oscar will ever return to professional football remains unclear. Brazilian media have reported that a full diagnosis will determine if he can safely resume training.
Once considered one of Brazil’s most promising creative talents, Oscar made his mark on the global stage before moving to the Chinese Super League, where he spent eight years away from top-level European football. Upon his return to Brazil, he had hoped to revive his career with São Paulo — yet that dream is now on hold as he faces a far more personal battle: regaining his health.
