Domestic football in Bangladesh is back after more than a month’s break, bringing renewed excitement for supporters across the country. During November’s international window, the national team played two fixtures—one a friendly against Nepal and the other an Asian Cup qualifier against India. As a result, the Bangladesh Football League paused earlier than usual, creating a lengthy gap in the domestic calendar.
But the wait is finally over. The league resumes today with the third round, and it starts with one of the most iconic fixtures in Bangladeshi football—Abahani Limited vs Mohammedan Sporting Club. This historic rivalry, often described as the heart of Dhaka football culture, returns today at the Shahid Dhirendranath Stadium in Cumilla, kicking off at 2:45 pm.
When the league paused on 20 October after the second round, both teams were struggling. Neither side has yet managed to secure a win this season, making today’s derby even more critical. Abahani suffered a defeat in one match and settled for a draw in the other. Mohammedan also lost their opening match to Fortis FC before drawing 1–1 against Police FC.
Though the fierce intensity of the traditional Abahani–Mohammedan rivalry has eased somewhat compared to its peak decades, the fixture still carries immense emotional and historical weight. Supporters of both sides view this match not merely as a league encounter but as a battle for prestige.
Meanwhile, eight other teams will also take the field today. Five-time league champions Bashundhara Kings will play Arambagh Krira Sangha in Manikganj. At Kings Arena, Fortis FC will host Police FC, hoping to build on their strong early-season momentum.
With the league restarting, every team faces the challenge of regaining rhythm and fitness after the long pause. For Abahani and Mohammedan, the stakes are even higher—today’s match offers a perfect opportunity to reshape their seasons and regain confidence.
