Lionel Scaloni’s future as head coach of Argentina is becoming increasingly uncertain, with his current contract set to expire in just over three months. Although the Argentine Football Association (AFA) is keen to retain the World Cup-winning manager, reports suggest that reaching an agreement on a new deal could prove difficult.
According to journalist Gustavo Yarroch, speaking on Radio La Red’s programme Un Buen Momento, the AFA remains firmly committed to keeping Scaloni in charge of the national side. The association is reportedly willing to offer him a new contract. Scaloni, however, is understood to have reservations about continuing into another cycle, with three main issues contributing to his uncertainty.
The strain of an eight-year journey
The first concern is linked to the sporting and mental demands of the job. Scaloni has spent around eight years at the centre of Argentina’s national-team project, overseeing one of the most successful periods in the country’s recent football history.
Under his leadership, Argentina ended a long wait for a major international trophy by winning the Copa América in 2021. The team then lifted the Finalissima before securing the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. These achievements transformed the expectations surrounding the national side and established Scaloni as one of the most successful coaches in Argentine football.
The next stage, however, could require a different kind of challenge. Argentina will gradually have to refresh its squad, introducing younger players while managing the transition of an experienced generation that has played together for years.
Scaloni is reportedly questioning whether he still has the same energy, motivation and desire required to lead such a demanding rebuilding process. Managing a national team at this level requires constant preparation, travelling, squad planning and close attention to the development of players. After such a long and highly successful spell, the question of whether he wants to commit himself to another lengthy cycle has therefore become significant.
Financial disputes add to the discomfort
A second concern reportedly comes from financial matters within the AFA. According to the report, a substantial portion of bonuses owed to members of the coaching staff and players remains unpaid.
The issue has reportedly caused frustration within the national-team camp. Those involved are said to find the situation difficult to understand, particularly given Argentina’s remarkable run of success since 2021.
The national side’s achievements have significantly raised its profile, while its performances have also strengthened its commercial importance. Against that backdrop, outstanding payments have become a source of dissatisfaction among members of the set-up.
For Scaloni, the matter is not simply about money. Financial disagreements can also affect confidence in the administration and the working relationship between the coaching staff and the football association. If the issue remains unresolved, it could become another complication in negotiations over his future.
Frustration over friendly opponents
The third issue concerns the organisation of international friendlies and, specifically, the quality of Argentina’s opponents.
Scaloni has previously made clear that he prefers his team to face strong and competitive sides during international windows. Matches against high-level opposition provide an opportunity to test the squad under pressure, identify weaknesses and assess tactical plans against teams with different styles.
According to the report, the AFA has not consistently managed to arrange the level of opposition Scaloni wants. Argentina have often faced comparatively weaker teams in friendly matches, leaving the coach dissatisfied with the competitive value of some fixtures.
The problem has reportedly been compounded by recent organisational delays. The AFA had been expected to announce the opponents for Argentina’s FIFA window at the end of this month, with the announcement initially anticipated earlier in the week. However, the confirmation has repeatedly been postponed.
There is also concern over the standard of some of the teams being considered for the upcoming tour. The options reportedly under discussion are some distance from the level of international opposition Scaloni would prefer.
Argentina’s future planning is therefore becoming an important part of the discussion surrounding the coach. The team must continue competing at the highest level while gradually preparing for the next generation, making the quality of international fixtures particularly relevant.
For now, the AFA wants Scaloni to remain at the helm, but the coach’s own willingness to continue appears less certain. The combination of eight years of intense responsibility, unresolved financial issues and dissatisfaction with the planning of friendly matches has created three significant obstacles.
With his current contract approaching its final months, the coming period could determine whether Scaloni begins another chapter with Argentina or eventually brings an extraordinary coaching era with the national team to an end.
