Harry Brook Withdraws from IPL to Focus on England Duties

New Delhi, 10 March 2025 (BSS/AFP): England batsman Harry Brook has withdrawn from the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL), citing the need to “recharge” and concentrate on his international commitments.

The 26-year-old, considered a leading contender to replace Jos Buttler as England’s white-ball captain, was signed by Delhi Capitals for the 2025 IPL season, which begins later this month.

Brook’s Decision and Apology

In a statement shared on social media, Brook expressed his regret over the decision, acknowledging the impact on his IPL franchise and its supporters.

“I have made the very difficult decision to pull out of the upcoming IPL,” Brook wrote.
“I apologise unreservedly to the Delhi Capitals and their supporters.”

This marks the second consecutive season that Brook has withdrawn from an IPL contract. Last year, he pulled out of his deal with Delhi Capitals following the passing of his grandmother.

Potential Consequences of Withdrawal

Brook now faces a possible two-year suspension from the IPL under regulations that discourage overseas players from making late withdrawals. While exceptions are typically granted for injuries, other reasons may not always be accommodated.

Despite this, Brook remains steadfast in his decision, citing his unwavering commitment to England cricket.

“I love cricket. Ever since I was a young boy, I dreamt of playing for my country, and I am extremely thankful to have the opportunity to play the game I love at this level,” he added.

A Packed Year Ahead for England

Brook’s withdrawal comes as England prepares for a demanding international calendar. This summer, England will host a five-Test series against India, followed by a home white-ball series against the West Indies, South Africa, and Ireland. Additionally, a one-off Test against Zimbabwe is scheduled for May.

Later in the year, England will embark on an Ashes tour to Australia, starting in November 2025.

Acknowledging the intensity of the upcoming schedule, Brook stated:

“It is a really important time for England cricket, and I want to fully commit to preparing for the upcoming series.
In order to do this, I need time to recharge after the busiest period in my career to date.”

Brook’s Past IPL Performance

Brook previously played in the 2023 IPL season for Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he made a significant impact by scoring a 55-ball century against Kolkata Knight Riders.

IPL 2025 Opening Match

The 2025 IPL season is set to commence on 22 March, with defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders taking on Royal Challengers Bengaluru at Eden Gardens.

Brook’s absence will be a blow to the Delhi Capitals, who had been counting on his aggressive batting to strengthen their squad. However, his decision underscores the increasing challenge faced by cricketers in balancing franchise and international commitments.
