Former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis has stunned the cricketing world by opting out of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) auction, choosing instead to participate in the upcoming season of the Pakistan Super League (PSL). His announcement marks one of the biggest player shifts ahead of next season’s franchise calendar.
The 41-year-old, who was released by Delhi Capitals in November after managing 202 runs in nine matches last season, confirmed his decision through a heartfelt statement on social media. Du Plessis, known for his consistency, leadership qualities and polished batting technique, said the choice was difficult but came after deep reflection on the next chapter of his career.
Having represented some of the most illustrious IPL franchises — including Chennai Super Kings, Rising Pune Supergiant, and Royal Challengers Bangalore, where he captained between 2022 and 2024 — du Plessis said he felt “immense gratitude” for the 14 seasons he spent in the league. He was picked up by Delhi last season at his base price of 20 million rupees.
Du Plessis emphasised how Indian cricket had shaped his professional and personal growth. Despite stepping away from the 2026 season, he insisted that this was “not a goodbye”, leaving the door open for a potential future IPL return.

Having previously appeared in the league for Peshawar Zalmi (2019) and Quetta Gladiators (2020), du Plessis said the competition’s talent pool and passionate atmosphere appealed to him as he sought fresh stimulation at this stage of his career.

Meanwhile, PCB officials and PSL franchises have unofficially welcomed the player’s return, with insiders indicating that multiple teams are eager to secure him due to his leadership expertise and top-order versatility.
