Shakib Al Hasan’s last Test series for Bangladesh was in India. Retiring from T20 internationals last year, he had planned to finish his red-ball career with the home series against South Africa. Political circumstances prevented his return, but the left-handed all-rounder wants a full series in Bangladesh before retiring.
Now in the UAE playing in the IL T20 league, Shakib’s team MI Emirates won yesterday (Sunday), although he did not shine personally. On the Bearded Before Wicket podcast with Moeen Ali, he said, “I have not officially retired from all formats. I am stating this for the first time. I plan to return to Bangladesh, play a complete series in ODI, Test, and T20 formats, and then retire.”
He explained, “I intend to retire from all formats after one series. This could start from T20 to ODI and Test, or Test, ODI, and T20. Either way, it is fine. I want to play a full series and retire afterwards. That is my plan.”
Since May 2024, Shakib has not returned to Bangladesh. Following the Awami League government’s fall, a murder case was filed against him. During the July uprising, he was absent from the country, later playing Tests in Pakistan and India. His last international match was the second Test against India in Kanpur.
Asked about returning to Bangladesh, Shakib said, “I am hopeful. That is why I am playing in the T20 league. I believe I will return.” He also said, “Fans have always supported me. A home series is a fitting farewell, and I want to give something back. Whether I play well or not, I will stay committed to this plan.”
Elected as Magura MP in January 2024, Shakib continues in politics, stating, “Cricket is ending, but my political career remains. I want to serve Bangladesh and Magura. This is my wish, which is still alive. Let’s see where Allah takes me.”
