England have confirmed that their seasoned fast bowler Mark Wood will miss the remainder of the Ashes series following a recurring knee injury. The news, while disappointing, was largely anticipated given Wood’s ongoing struggles with his left knee, which flared up again during the first Test in Perth. England have opted to bring in 28-year-old pacer Matthew Fisher as Wood’s replacement.
Wood, 36, had hoped to recover in time to play the final two Tests in Melbourne and Sydney. However, even he admitted that age has begun to take a toll on his ability to recover quickly from injury. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has stated that Wood will return home later this week to undergo intensive rehabilitation under the guidance of the national team’s medical staff.
This is not the first time Wood has battled knee issues. In February, he underwent surgery to repair a longstanding knee problem, which had affected his performances during England’s Champions Trophy campaign. His return to Test cricket at Perth marked his first appearance in the longest format in 15 months. Despite bowling 11 overs, he failed to claim a wicket as England succumbed to an eight-wicket defeat. He was absent for the second Test in Brisbane, which England lost by eight wickets, leaving the side 0-2 down in the Ashes series.
Fisher, who has played just one Test for England, will now have the chance to stake his claim on the international stage. The right-arm pacer, standing six foot two inches tall, made his debut against the West Indies in 2022. He has been playing with England’s Lions in Australia and will join the senior squad ahead of the third Ashes Test, scheduled to begin in Adelaide on 17 December.
Meanwhile, Australia announced earlier in the day that Josh Hazlewood will also miss the Ashes series due to injury. However, the hosts are bolstering their squad with the return of Pat Cummins. Usman Khawaja, who missed the second Test with a back issue, may also be back in the line-up, keeping Australia’s team strong as they look to maintain their 2-0 advantage.
England face a crucial challenge in Adelaide without one of their most experienced bowlers, but Fisher’s inclusion offers a fresh opportunity to add pace and aggression to the attack. With the series now slipping away, the spotlight will be on England’s bowlers to rise to the occasion.
