Thousands of football enthusiasts from across India had assembled at Kolkata’s Jadavpur Stadium from the early hours in order to catch a glimpse of Lionel Messi. The highly anticipated ‘G.O.A.T. India Tour’ had generated immense excitement and eager anticipation among spectators. One devoted fan, Pradip Dhar, commented, “I bought a ticket for four thousand rupees just to see Messi with my own eyes. I did not waste money attempting to see the ministers.”
Like Pradip, countless supporters had undertaken long and tiring journeys to reach the stadium. He told the media, “I travelled from Kharagpur on a late-night train and spent the night at the station. I painstakingly arranged the money for the ticket solely to see God in person, even if only once.”
The stadium had been prepared for multiple special events focused on Messi. These included meet-and-greet sessions, a reception, the virtual inauguration of his 70-foot-tall statue, exhibitions, and other planned activities. Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan was also scheduled to attend with his young son Abram as part of the event.
However, the reality at the stadium failed to meet fans’ expectations. Once inside, ordinary spectators struggled to see Messi clearly due to the security cordon surrounding him, along with the dense crowd of organisers, leaders, ministers, and celebrities. Gradually, frustration and anger began to build among the audience.
As tensions intensified, some spectators began throwing plastic water bottles from the stands. For safety reasons, Messi was swiftly escorted out of the stadium. The disruption prompted intervention from the police and event organisers, and following an investigation, the organiser was arrested.
The disappointment of the fans cast a shadow over what had been intended as a landmark moment in football history. Spectators expressed their frustration, saying, “We travelled such a long distance just for Messi, yet we could not see him properly. Both our efforts and money have been wasted.”
This incident clearly demonstrates that without direct engagement between prominent athletes and their fans, alongside adequate security measures, large-scale disorder can arise.
