Indian cricketing stalwart Virat Kohli has strongly hinted that he has likely played his final Test series in Australia, following India’s 1-3 loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The former captain struggled throughout the series, managing just 190 runs in nine innings, with his lone century coming in the second innings of the opening Test in Perth.
Kohli, known for his remarkable performances in Australia over the years, appeared a shadow of his former self during this tour. Unlike his iconic twin centuries in Adelaide in 2014, the 2024-25 series saw him repeatedly dismissed while chasing deliveries outside off stump. The Australian pace attack, spearheaded by Scott Boland, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Josh Hazlewood, consistently exploited this weakness.
Speaking at the RCB Innovation Labs event, Kohli candidly acknowledged his disappointment but expressed acceptance of his performance, stating, “If you ask me about the most intense disappointment, this Australia tour is the freshest in my mind. But I cannot dwell on it. I might not have another tour of Australia in me in four years’ time.”
Despite his subdued showing, Kohli reassured fans that he is not making any retirement announcements yet. “Don’t get nervous. I am not announcing anything. I still love playing the game,” he clarified.
India’s 1-3 series defeat meant they missed out on a place in the World Test Championship (WTC) final for the first time. Given that India’s next Test tour of Australia is expected in the 2028-29 season, Kohli is unlikely to feature in another red-ball contest Down Under.
Reflecting on the mental challenge of dealing with failure, he admitted, “I scored well in the first Test and thought, ‘Right, this is going to be another big series for me.’ But it didn’t turn out that way. The key is acceptance. This is what happened, and I must be honest with myself.”
Kohli’s Thoughts on India’s Champions Trophy Triumph
Switching to limited-overs cricket, Kohli praised India’s dominance in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, where Rohit Sharma’s team clinched the title undefeated. He played a pivotal role in the campaign, scoring a century against Pakistan and a crucial 84-run knock in the semi-final against Australia.
“India was the best side in the tournament, so it’s no surprise we won. The team played exceptional cricket,” he remarked.
A Possible Return for the Olympics?
Kohli also teased the possibility of a T20I comeback for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where cricket is set to feature as a medal event. While he has retired from T20 internationals, he hinted at a one-off return for the Games.
“I don’t know, maybe if we are playing for the gold medal, I might sneak in for one game, win it, and come back home,” Kohli joked.
He further added, “To be Olympic champions would be a magnificent feeling. It would be historic, and I am sure we’ll be in contention.”
A Career of Highs and Lows in Australia
Kohli’s Test record in Australia remains among the finest for an Indian batsman, with several match-winning performances over the years. However, the 2024-25 series was a humbling reminder of how quickly the game evolves. As he inches closer to the twilight of his career, fans will keenly watch how Kohli shapes his cricketing journey in the coming years.
