Argentina’s World Cup squad: Who will Scaloni keep out of the 50-man squad?

Speculation surrounding Argentina’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup has gathered pace in recent weeks, fuelled by local media reports and widespread discussion on social platforms. Some claims have suggested that the defending champions have already settled on a provisional list of 26 players. However, comments from head coach Lionel Scaloni indicate that such reports are premature and somewhat misleading. Far from finalising his selections, Scaloni has made it clear that Argentina’s World Cup planning remains firmly in a phase of careful evaluation and broad monitoring.

Speaking in his first interview of the year at the Argentine Football Association (AFA) studio, Scaloni offered a candid insight into his current thinking. According to the World Cup–winning coach, Argentina are working with a pool of around 50 players, all of whom are considered capable of competing at the highest level. “We have nearly 50 players with very similar levels,” Scaloni explained. “Any one of them could earn a place. Injuries and poor form matter greatly, and on those issues we do not compromise.”

The unusually large preliminary list is a deliberate strategy shaped by recent experience. Ahead of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, several players suffered injuries shortly before the tournament, forcing last-minute adjustments. Scaloni is determined not to repeat that situation. By maintaining an expanded shortlist, he ensures tactical flexibility and adequate cover in every position as the tournament approaches.

Argentina enter the 2026 World Cup as reigning champions, having lifted the trophy in Qatar under Scaloni’s guidance. A significant number of players from that triumphant squad are expected to remain in contention. The coach believes many of them are now at an ideal stage of their careers, combining experience with physical maturity. Age, however, is not a decisive factor. Performance, consistency, and adaptability remain the principal criteria. As Scaloni noted, several members of the 2022 squad have “earned the right” to compete again for the title through sustained excellence.

Unsurprisingly, much of the attention centres on Lionel Messi. Now 38, the iconic forward has not yet confirmed whether he will feature in what could be his sixth World Cup. While Messi has previously expressed interest in playing in 2026, he has also emphasised that he prefers to take decisions gradually. Scaloni recently met Messi in Funes, Spain, but stressed that there was no pressure-filled discussion about the World Cup. “We didn’t talk about the tournament,” Scaloni said. “There is still time, and the decision must be his alone.”

The 2026 World Cup will begin on 11 June across the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Argentina have been placed in Group J, alongside Algeria, Austria, and Jordan. Their campaign will open on 16 June against Algeria in Kansas City. Scaloni expects a demanding group, praising Algeria’s structure, Austria’s high-pressing style, and Jordan’s impressive qualifying campaign.

As Scaloni cautions, the group stage may be difficult, but the real challenge will come in the knockout rounds. For now, Argentina’s World Cup journey remains defined not by certainty, but by measured preparation and informed patience.
